Discover modern art at the Stedelijk Museum

The Stedelijk Museum, is a must-visit during your city trip to Amsterdam. The Modern and Contemporary Art Museum Amsterdam is housed in a two-part building. The original building was designed by Dutch architect Adriaan Willem Weissman and completed in 1895. In 2012, a new wing—aptly nicknamed “the bathtub” for its polished white look and shape—was added to accommodate the ever-growing spatial needs of the museum. The impressive permanent collection features work by Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and many others. Some of the most famous pieces on display include Van Gogh’s Les bêcheurs (1889), Appel’s Vragende Kinderen (1949) and Chagall’s L’autoportrait aux sept doigts (1912). The Modern and Contemporary Art Museum Amsterdam also houses temporary exhibitions and installations by prominent contemporary artists and designers.
