Cinematographic photography Gregory Crewdson in Reflex
Reflex Amsterdam presents cinematic photography by American photographer Gregory Crewdson at its gallery from March 11 to May 6.
American photographer Gregory Crewdson enjoys international acclaim for his cinematic style with intriguing photographs staged to the finest detail. With the Eveningside series (2021-2022), Crewdson explores moments of contemplation within the confines of everyday life; in workplaces and in moments just outside those work structures. The characters in the photographs are sparse and often seen through store windows, in mirror reflections or positioned amidst their daily routine at a railroad bridge, doorway, porch, bank, beauty salon, supermarket or on the streets of American suburbs.
The photographer brings the point of view closer to the characters and plays with light and dark. With special effects, such as fog, rain, smoke and haze, and an extensive production and lighting team, he realizes a monochromatic palette. The result is a rich gothic atmosphere, reminiscent of film noir and classic films, but with the possibilities and clarity of the most current technology in digital photography.
Reflex is an established gallery representing both upcoming and internationally renowned contemporary artists, including Miles Aldridge, Nobuyoshi Araki, Harland Miller, David LaChapelle, Todd Hido, Daido Moriyama, Iris Schomaker, Keith Coventry, Marcus Harvey and Ichwan Noor.
Gregory Crewdson (b. 1962) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He trained at SUNY Purchase and Yale School of Art, to which he is currently a professor of photography. Crewdson has been active as a visual artist for more than thirty years, exhibiting in leading galleries and museums worldwide. With his feature film-like methodology, he tells a story in one image. In the process, photography and film are brought together.
During the exhibition in the gallery, Reflex Amsterdam also presents a selection of photographs from the series Beneath the Roses and Cathedral of the Pines in its second location Reflex, the Residence.
