Sensory exhibition Jimmy Nelson at Fabrique des Lumières
Fabrique des Lumières on the Westergas site is the largest immersive art center in the Netherlands. In a large industrial space with walls up to 17 meters high, you can experience sensory exhibitions of iconic artists. Advanced technology and accompanying music bring the artworks to life.
Gustav Klimt
Fabrique des Lumières is showcasing the work of the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt and his contemporaries. The colorful work of the Viennese artist, with its many decorative patterns, is perfect for the concept. Klimt was one of the most important figures of the Wiener Secession, a movement that aimed to break away from academic art. The exhibition also features work by other important Viennese artists such as Egon Schiele and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who were inspired by Klimt’s work.
Jimmy Nelson
In addition to Klimt, Fabrique des Lumières is showcasing the exhibition “The Last Sentinels, Heroes from near and far” by Dutch-British photographer Jimmy Nelson. It is an overwhelming tribute to humanity. In this exhibition, Jimmy Nelson’s iconic photos of “The Last Sentinels” are blown up to life-size proportions using a combination of photography, film, animation, and sound. The exhibition is enhanced with images from Jimmy Nelson’s latest project, “Between the Sea and the Sky”.
Have you always wanted to step into a painting and wander around in the artist’s created world? At Fabrique des Lumières, you come very close to this desire. Be inspired by a virtual translation of the works of artists Gustav Klimt and Jimmy Nelson.
Between the Sea and the Sky
Jimmy Nelson (1967) has been photographing original cultures his entire life, which resulted in his first book “Before They Pass Away” in 2013. Five years later, “Homage to Humanity” (2018) followed. Nelson places the people he photographs on a pedestal, giving extraordinary and often almost forgotten communities a dignified and visible platform. With his passionate portraits, he celebrates human diversity and beauty.
For his latest book, “Between the Sea & the Sky,” Jimmy Nelson portrays twenty Dutch communities in regional costumes and the environment that shaped them.
During the recent pandemic with global travel restrictions, Jimmy Nelson realized that he doesn’t have to travel to the ends of the world to discover exceptional human beauty. That insight led to a new project close to home. The resulting art book, “Between the Sea & the Sky,” is an ode to the Netherlands, Nelson’s adopted homeland.
Jimmy Nelson Gallery
In honor of Jimmy Nelson’s new art book, he is opening an art gallery for a period of four months at the Westergasfabriek, near Fabrique des Lumières. The gallery will feature both new and older works by the renowned photographer.
