District: East

Amsterdam East – A hidden gem

Amsterdam East is one of the hidden gems of the city. With trendy hotels, cool concept stores and restautants this is a neighborhood you shouldn’t skip! Amsterdam East used to be a bit of a “rundown” district. But after the renovation of the Wibautstraat this district has changed. The Wibautstraat itself is building towards an avenue look and the rest of the district is developing into a young creative area. Amsterdam East is one of the relatively more quite areas when it comes to tourism. So maybe we shouldn’t tell you this, but we think the district is really worth a visit.

What to do in Amsterdam East?

Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics) is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam’s Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Proeflokaal ’t NWE Diep is a small distillery, located in the gorgeous green surroundings of Flevopark. They are dedicated to crafting the best organic spirits and liqueurs. In the small proeflokaal you can enjoy their special genevers, or have a nice beer or glass of wine with locally produced bar food. On a nice sunny day you can enjoy these drinks on their terrace overlooking the small pond of the Flevopark. In the eastern part of Amsterdam great places keep popping up. The newest addition is Bar Botanique of the restaurant entrepreneurs who gave us Bar Bukowski and De Biertuin. Actually the full name is Bar Botanique, Café Tropique and it is open all day for breakfast, pies, salads and wood-oven pizzas.
