On the edge of the Amsterdam you’ll find the largest recreational area in town and one of the biggest in Europe: the Amsterdamse Bos (The Amsterdam Forest). From the city center it’s a 45-minute trip South, that’s absolutely worth it if you enjoy stretched out green surroundings and outdoor activities. The Amsterdam forest, which is technically a park, is home to over 150 different trees, both foreign and native.
So much to do at the Amsterdamse Bos
There are many things to do in the Amsterdamse bos. The lake called the Grote Vijver is a perfect spot to go for a swim or to rent a pedal boat for some fun on the water. Visit the goat farm with a petting zoo for their delicious homemade goat’s milk cheese and ice cream or go horseback riding at one of the two riding schools situated near the park. The Bosbaan is a stretch of water that flows through the area and is often the setting of rowing classes and competitions.
Looking for some action and not scared of a little height? The Fun Forest Climbing Park has various climbing elements, zip lines, bridges and ladders through the trees. From 4 up to 15 meters high, so its suitable for both young and old.
Feeling hungry after a stroll or one of the many activities? All over the park Kiosks can be found for a quick drink or bite, but there are tons of places to sit down and enjoy as well. In the heart of the park you’ll find Chez Favié, a coffeehouse that’s open all year round. They have a spacious terrace and an extensive menu with tapas, sandwiches and beverages. The Meerzicht Farm has some of the best traditional Dutch pancakes. Top it with cheese, bacon and syrup for the ultimate treat. Restaurant Het Bosch is your go to if you want to lounge in style with a spectacular view over the Nieuwe Meer lake. Their French-Mediterranean menu offers a wide selection of tasty dishes and accompanying drinks.
Sleeping at the park
On the south edge of the park you’ll find Camping Amsterdamse Bos. A beautiful place to set up your tent and enjoy a night (or nights) out in nature. Rather have a little more luxury? They have cottages available for rent.
Events
Every year around 250 events take place at the Amsterdamse Bos. From sports competitions to (food)markets and (music)festivals. The stunning open-air theatre hosts performances from July to August almost every evening and has a restaurant for a pre-theatre dinner or picnic.
Have a look at the calendar for all upcoming events.
