De Oude Kerk (The Old Church) in the Red Light District is the first church ever built in the Netherlands and the oldest still existing building in Amsterdam. Bordering the Amstel river, it used to be a place where sailors came together to pray for safe returns. The contrast between the grand church and the coffee shops and sex workers in the surrounding area could not be bigger and will for sure leave you amazed.
History and modern art at De Oude Kerk
De Oude Kerk was originally a Catholic church but later became the character of Dutch Protestantism. Nowadays the historical building is used both as a church as well as a contemporary art museum and is the biggest commissioner of art in the Netherlands. The two organs and medieval stained-glass windows make it into one of Amsterdam’s most impressive monuments. Their art collection counts over 2,600 objects and 100 paintings and prints and holds different temporary exhibits throughout the year. If you’re interested in the history they’ll love to tell you more about it during one of the tours.
Have a look on their website for more on the church and its exhibitions.
