The Ysbreeker a famous riverside restaurant and cafe in Amsterdam East and is known for its rich history, its beautiful terrace on the river and their good food. On a sunny day the large terrace along the Amstel river is full and it is hard to find a good spot. Stay on the lookout though, it is well worth it. Here you can order a drink, have lunch with friends or settle down for a dinner in the sun. Whether you order a quick bitterbal with a beer or a good glass of wine paired with a lobster, it is always a treat.
What do you order at the Ysbreeker
When we talk about the Ysbreeker, we also have to mention the burgers. They have a place on our best burger in Amsterdam list, so burger-lovers should definitely try one of their juicy burgers. But of course there is more … At lunchtime you can order a delicious steak tartare, various tasty sandwiches or a delicious cod fillet. For dinner, the plateau du chef is a good choice, but also the Dutch asparagus (during the season), short ribs, the Ysbreker Chilli or the lobster (a half or whole lobster) are highly recommended.
De Ysbreeker in Amsterdam
Brimming with life and a meeting-place for each and everyone in Amsterdam. A place where, if you like, you could spend the entirety of your day. A historical space with a rich history and a beautiful terrace along the Amstel river. Also, let’s not forgot a kitchen which uses exclusively fresh ingredients. The Ysbreeker building was built in 1702. A proud date that still shows with pride on the front windows of The Ysbreeker. The restaurant is named after the icebreakers that were docked in front of the building from 1702 till 1860. The ships would clear a path through the ice covered Amstel river towards the city of Vecht during the cold winter months. During those years the location served as a tavern for the shipmates and the locals of the neighborhood.
Andreas Wolff, the son of Jan Wolff, decided to renovate the place in 2010 while preserving its history. The arches and the floor in the front where maintained in their original style. The Ysbreeker installed three stained glass panes with icebreaker motives to commemorate its history. Furthermore, the restaurant still kept its Wilhelmina model billiard table dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.
