Giorgio Andreotta Calò in the Oude Kerk

This summer Giorgio Andreotta Calò will have an exposition in the Oude Kerk of Amsterdam. For this exposition he developed special art to fit in with the exterior of the church. This exposition is on display from the 25th of May until the 23rd of September. Besides that, Giorgio Andreotta Calò is also creating a permanent piece for the holy grave. Underneath the Byzantine sculpted canopy he will place a mirror to catch the light of the sunrise.

More about the exposition in the Oude Kerk

During the exposition the artist will place red foil and plexiglass in front of the high windows of the church. This instantly changes the atmosphere in the church as it casts a beautiful red glow throughout the building during the day. At night the red will shine outwards and the church will blend in beautifully with the surrounding Red Light District. With the red light Calò brings the Roman Catholic imagery back into the building and reflects on the Iconoclasm of 1566 and the turning point in religious thinking.
