Living for Photography

Living for Photography, an exhibition about the famous Amsterdam-Jewish Maria Austria, is on display in the Jewish Historical Museum. It is the first time the museum shows such an extensive collection of her work.

Living for Photography – The exhibition

The exhibition runs from January 26th until the 2nd of September and it is the first time her work is shown in such big numbers. In earlier exhibitions in 1989 and 2001, the museum showed the innovative and splendid theater photography of Austria and her pictures of the reconstruction. But now the museum has a much bigger collection on display, showing her true talent as an artist. These works include portraits and an impressive reportage on the now-famous Achterhuis. This reportage was made in 1954 on behalf of Otto Frank. Besides her work the museum also has information about her life and work next to these pictures, the perfect homage to a woman who lived for her art.

The Jewish Historical Museum is part of the Jewish Historical Quarter in Amsterdam. Visit their website to see what else is on in this cultural quarter.
