Loetje aan ‘t IJ

For over thirty years, Café Loetje has served as a landmark in Amsterdam. Regulars and out-of-towners alike flock there for its homemade fries and juicy steaks, which many have proclaimed to be the best in the Netherlands. Café Loetje feels closer to a pub than a bistro. The newest addition to the Loetje chain of restaurants is their beautiful restaurant on the banks of the IJ-river in Amsterdam North overlooking the water and skyline of Amsterdam.

Loetje aan ‘t IJ

Meat lovers gather at Loetje aan ‘t IJ. Loetje is a chain of steak restaurants in the Netherlands, but don’t let the “chain” part of the business fool you. The steak here is top quality and attracts people from all walks of life. Steak comes in a few variations, all of them have their own qualities and are very tasty! If you aren’t in the mood for a juicy steak we can recommend the sole fish, it is almost as good as the steak and a great alternative if you aren’t a meat lover.

The history of Loetje

Loetje aan ‘t IJ is only one of the many Loetje locations in the Amsterdam area. Almost 40 years ago, Café Loetje was just a neighborhood pub in Amsterdam South. Here you could enjoy a fry-up, a meatball or a serving of cheese. The sirloin steak was introduced when it appeared that patrons had an increasing desire for a ‘real’ dinner. This is where Loetje’s butcher background came in handy. The steak was a big success. The billiard tables were replaced by regular tables and the ‘new’ café filled up every day with fans of that wonderful slice of meat – ‘the Loetje steak’.

The restaurant has grown since then and people from all over have gotten to know this super tasty steak. In addition to the original Loetje there are now many branches in other parts of Amsterdam and even a few outside of the city. With local and world-wide fans this restaurant is a must-visit when you are in the city.
