at Gerard Hofland Gallery

About Rise and Shine, Saturnine

Kirkham’s work is often highly regarded for its uncompromising nature. When looking at his paintings an eerie feeling creeps up on you while you view the dark corners of human existence. With the raw reality that hits you, it is hard to imagine that most of his work is painted mostly from the mind. He creates a fascinating mix between reality and fantasy as he places is subjects in uncomfortable or awkward positions. While doing so, the characters in Kirkham’s paintings often appear distant, as if disconnected or sunken into the emptiness of their subconsciousness. The scenes portrayed by Kirkham bring out a certain sense of discomfort while staying intriguing and touching because of his empathy for every aspect of human life, even those dark corners.

Michael Kirkham (Blackpool, UK, 1971) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He completed his education at the Glasgow School of Art and De Ateliers, Amsterdam.
