Foam is an internationally renowned museum that exhibits all genres of photography in a beautiful canal-side setting. As well as displaying a wide variety of works, it acts as a creative hub where photographers can meet and participate in forums and symposiums. In recent years Foam has showcased some of the biggest names in photography, including Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt, Anton Corbijn, Alex Prager and Cy Twombly. Alongside these large-scale events, the brightly lit, white rooms of this revamped canal-house are filled with work from upcoming talents.

Foam Amsterdam, what’s on display?

The collection of Foam Amsterdam is ever changing. The museum shows a wide variety of genres ranging from historical pictures and art photography to street photography and fashion photography. Famous names that had an exhibition in Foam in the past are Helmut Newton, William Klein, Ai Weiwei and André Kertész. But also current subjects that are popular in mediaget their own exhibition. Foam Amsterdam is well-known for its interest in new and upcoming photographers. With special exhibitions for these young photographers and a special team within the museum that searches for national and international talent, Foam Amsterdam is a great place to meet the photographers that are going to make waves in the future.

The museum is housed in three adjoining beautiful monumental canal houses. With many stairs and differences in level, the building is fun to navigate and also a sightseeing spot on its own. The museum also includes a bookshop, a café and a gallery called Foam Editions where you can buy work from young photographers. The museum also has its own magazine, Foam Magazine. Occasionally Foam has readings, discussions, workshops, events, and movies about photography, which make your visit extra special.
