Museum Our Lord in the Attic

Museum “Our Lord in the Attic” is tucked away somwhere in the heart of Amsterdam’s inner city. The museum is an uniquely preserved seventeenth-century house from the Dutch Golden Age. Explore the narrow corridors and climb the stairs to historically furnished living rooms, kitchens and bedsteads, leading literally to the high point of the museum: an entire church in the attic.

This hidden Catholic church dates all the way back to 1663. At the time it was prohibited to celebrate mass, but when hidden away properly authorities would turn a blind eye. That early on the Netherlands was already very tolerant of many different religions, the museum is to this day the image of this religious tolerance.  Freedom of religion and of conscience are central themes at the museum today. It makes Our Lord in the Attic far more than a museum: it is a special place in which people come to contemplate. The museum is truly an unique experience to anyone visiting Amsterdam and the Red Light District.
